On Wednesday night, there was much pressure on Austria’s VCA AMSTETTEN NÖ as they contested their return match with MÁV Foxconn SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁR from Hungary in the 32nd Finals of the men’s Challenge Cup. In front of their home crowd at Johann-Pölz-Halle, AMSTETTEN had to win 3-1 or 3-0 to get into a Golden Set, but the Hungarian vice champions did not allow that. With yet another strong performance, they advanced to the next round in their first appearance in European competitions – and will now play Switzerland’s Volley NÄFELS in the 16th Finals.

“They have been better in every element of the game, and it is an obvious result. They played two strong games and qualified as the better team,” stated VCA head coach Tomas Galimberti.

Although his team started good into the first set, in the middle of it, the Hungarians managed to widen their advantage. After 22 minutes, they had their first set ball, which they cashed in their second attempt (25-19). In the second set, AMSTETTEN had a clear lead of eight points (9-1), but SZÉKESFEHÉRVÁR managed to come back and had their next set ball. They scored it (25-20) and secured their spot in the next round. The final set was won 25-18 by the Hungarian team, who remained flawless by winning two times 3-0 against the Austrians.

“It looked easier than it was. AMSTETTEN is a good team, but they did not have much stability in their game. There have been some close moments, but we worked together as a team and that was the key to our success. We are quite a young team, won our first European Cup matches and we look forward to the next challenges."
