After four years, we have a new champion in Italy: In the final clash of the Italian SuperLega, the Itas Trentino overpowered Cucine Lube Civitanova in three sets and broke the Lube’s three-season championship streak.

The fifth and the last match of the Italian SuperLega playoff finals took place yesterday, and Itas Trentino met the titleholders Cucine Lube Civitanova. Of course, Lube was the side that used to play in that atmosphere, but Trentino showed determination and ambition to play a better game. This was reflected in the result, and with a comfortable victory in straight sets (3-0: 25-20, 25-20, 25-19), Trentino became the new champions in Italy and completed the season at the top of the podium.

Including three blocks, the promising Italian outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto was the top scorer of the battle with 17 points. His teammate, Matey Kaziyski, also played a perfect game: The 38-year-old Bulgarian outside hitter produced 13 points in total, with a 47% attack percentage, three aces, and one block. This performance also made him the Most Valuable Player of the final series. His compatriot, Aleksandar Nikolov, played with 12 points, which was not enough on the losing side.

Trentino succeeded in beating the most dominant squad in the domestic league by showing great dedication and always keeping their hopes alive: After winning the final series by 3-2, Trentino took their fifth championship in the domestic league. They also put an end to their eight years of longing for this title. It is the first trophy for the Trentino side this year: After taking silver both in Italian Cup and the FIVB Club World Championship, Italian expert Angelo Lorenzetti’s squad finished the season in the best possible way. Lube side, on the other hand, concluded the whole season without receiving any trophies.

The domestic league tournaments are now over in the country, and because Itas Trentino won the domestic league title, all three trophies in Italy this season have gone to different teams (Piacenza in Italian Cup and Perugia in the Italian Supercup). Therefore, unlike the domination of some teams in various countries, all tournaments were and will be open to every result in the country. So, one thing is for sure Italy will continue being one of the most worth-watching countries next season as well.
