The Spanish national league reached its climax this past weekend with two teams from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria – CV Guaguas and CV Hidramar Gran Canaria – emerging victorious.
On Saturday, CV Guaguas triumphed for the second time in the Superliga Masculina since their return to the elite division only three seasons ago. The Canary team defeated Río Duero SORIA in all three matches of the championship series. The galaxy of stars coached by Sergio Miguel Camarero completed an immaculate season, with 29 wins in as many matches in the league. Italian outside hitter Paolo Zonca was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final for his outstanding contribution throughout the knockout stage.
The victory of CV Guaguas completed the domination of the city of Las Palmas in Spanish volleyball, which began a few days earlier with CV Hidramar GRAN CANARIA conquering the women’s Liga Iberdrola for the second time. Marcos Dreyer’s players defeated last year’s champion, Tenerife Libby’s LA LAGUNA, in a local rivalry playoff. Cuban outside hitter, Sulian Matienzo was the MVP of the final, leading her team to victory and preventing the opponents from forcing a fifth and definitive match.
