The preparations are already in full swing for the CEV U17 Women Volleyball European Championship, which starts on July 11, as stated at the press conference held in the Békéscsaba City Sports Hall, where those interested could also hear about the goals of the home team.

The history of this summer’s CEV U17 Women Volleyball European Championship goes back to March 2020. Back then, the National Federations of Hungary and Serbia signed a cooperation agreement, one of the most important points of which is the organisation of the joint continental tournament for U17 girls. According to Ádám Baran, the board member responsible for Hungarian-Serbian relations and the president of the local Volleyball club, BRSE, it is a great honour that Békéscsaba can host such a prestigious event.

“Volleyball will take centre stage in Békéscsaba in the coming weeks, as the city will first host the Héraklész international tournament, in which the team preparing for the European Championship will compete against their Croatian age group rivals and a Hungarian university team. After that, the men’s senior national team will play the semi-final of the European Silver League against Cyprus on July 1, and the U17 continental competition will start the following week."

The Hungarian Volleyball Association is also looking forward to the start of the European Championships, said Gabriella Vatai, the operational director of the Organising Committee, who added that Europe’s volleyball elite is coming to Hungary. “The association has had a good relationship with the BRSE for a long time, and its results over the past ten years have predestined it to be able to organise such a tournament. Those interested can choose between two types of tickets: they can buy a day ticket, which is valid for all four matches on a given day, or they can also buy a season ticket that allows them to see all the matches of the competition played in Békéscsaba.”

András Horváth, the head coach of the Hungarian U17 women’s national team, reassured the representatives of the press that the preparations are progressing at a good pace, and that the Héraklész tournament can help identify many things that may be important before the start of the European Championship:

“We do not focus on the result, but on the game shown. This is also important because only 14 players can participate in the European Championship, while the current squad consists of 16 girls, so everyone must give their all to be able to play in the continental tournament.”

Orsolya Matuska is looking forward to contesting a European Championship on home soil

Orsolya Matuska is a member not only of the national team, but also of the BRSE U17 team. She will be wearing the Hungarian national team shirt for the first time. “It is a special pleasure that Békéscsaba is hosting the European Championship, as it makes me feel doubly at home. I feel good in the national team, and I am sure that all my teammates will give their best.”
