Croatia accounts for latest sensation at #EuroVolleyU17W
News
As the pool stage of the competition continues at #EuroVolleyU17W in Serbia and Hungary, the young players contesting the continental tournament continue to account for some real surprises.
On Tuesday, Georgia had sensationally beaten hosts Serbia but on Wednesday they did not seem to have enough energy left in the tanks, both mentally and physically, and lost to Bulgaria – who have improved their win-loss record to 2-0. Regarded rather as outsiders, Croatia impressed with their 3-1 victory over pre-favourites Italy, thereby showing that they have the potential to achieve something extraordinary in this competition. Croatia currently leads the way in Pool I with two wins from as many matches and maximum six points. Co-hosts Serbia made up for their setback the day before, but they had to fight for another five sets before they eventually edged past Estonia. Poland and the Netherlands delivered another match with many twists and turns, before the young Poles had the upper hand at the tiebreak.
In Pool II being contested in Békéscsaba, Slovenia and Greece have an immaculate record of two wins from as many matches after on Wednesday they did not drop any sets in their respective fixtures with Hungary and Belgium. France thrashed Germany in three sets to open Wednesday’s programme and Türkiye made up for their loss at the hands of Greece on Tuesday by cruising to a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Romania.
The pool stage continues Thursday with another set of eight matches – four per pool – before the teams enjoy a well-deserved break on Friday.
