Croatia, Italy and Greece seal #EuroVolleyU17W semi-final spot
News
Croatia and Greece have secured their spot in the semis of #EuroVolleyU17W after extending their winning streak to six matches in a row in the pool stage of the competition being co-hosted by Serbia and Hungary.
As competition resumed in Pool I in Vrnjačka Banja, as they had already done with some other opponents in the group, Estonia put up much of a fight, but they ended up losing 2-3 to Poland after a real battle. Later in the day, Serbia booked their third victory in the competition and by doing so, they somehow extended the gap separating Bulgaria from a spot in the semi-finals. Serbia beat Bulgaria 3-1 after a match with many twists and turns. Italy cemented their second place in the pool by claiming their fifth victory in six matches as they beat the Netherlands 3-1. This is enough for the Azzurrine to seal a spot in the semis. Croatia remains at the top of the charts following their comprehensive victory over Georgia (3-0) to make it six wins in a row.
In Pool II in Békéscsaba, Greece routed Slovenia in straight sets to emulate Croatia and record a sixth win in as many matches, eventually celebrating their qualification to the semis by dancing to the notes of sirtaki. Türkiye and Slovenia share second place in the group on a 4-2 win-loss record after Türkiye also suffered a setback on Tuesday, losing 1-3 to Belgium. In the other matches of the day, Romania beat France 3-1 with 12 points scored by the only 12-year-old Bianca Cucu and hosts Hungary edged Germany at the tiebreak despite Leana Grozer scoring as many as 31 points for the eventual losers.
The pool phase ends on Wednesday when we know which team will join Croatia, Italy, and Greece in the semis.
