Even though the absence of four core players obviously affected the performance of the home side and Team Sweden had to be content with fourth place, the Final Four of the women’s European Golden League held this past weekend in Ängelholm was a resounding success. The event – and more specifically the bronze medal match featuring Sweden and Romania – did set an all-time attendance record for women’s Volleyball in the Scandinavian country, with more than 4,000 fans coming together at Catena Arena!
Superstar Isabelle Haak scored as many as 43 points – and yet Sweden lost to Romania a highly entertaining bronze medal game. The atmosphere was just electric – and many of the attendees truly enjoyed their first such experience with elite Volleyball.
CEV President Roko Sikirić was among the high-profile guests watching from the stands and he deserved much praise to the local organisers. “The Swedish Volleyball Federation and the local Organising Committee did a great job, especially in keeping the audience engaged and in securing a great atmosphere for the players of all participating teams. This clearly shows that Volleyball is experiencing a golden era in Sweden and we now look forward to next year’s EuroVolley in Gothenburg to raise the profile of the sport even further,” he said.
The absence of four players prevented Sweden from retaining the Golden League crown they had secured last year. However, with their World Championship debut coming up later this year in Thailand and next year’s EuroVolley on home soil, Haak & Co. still have much to look forward to. Volleyball in Sweden continues to grow at a very fast pace and later this week the men’s national team will be playing Hungary in the Silver League Finals where promotion to the 2026 edition of the Golden League will be at stake. A success story to be continued…
