European teams advance as others fall behind in Thailand
Recap
The latest matches at the 2025 Women’s World Championship offered more clarity in the preliminary phase, with several European teams making important steps toward the knockout rounds. Türkiye, Germany, Poland, and Serbia all recorded victories, while Spain, Bulgaria, and Ukraine saw their paths become more difficult.
In Pool E, Türkiye booked their place in the next round after defeating Bulgaria 3-0. Melissa Vargas led all scorers with 20 points, and Ebrar Karakurt added 13. The win places Türkiye on six points at the top of the group, level with Canada, who also advanced after their 3-2 victory over Spain. With Spain on one point and Bulgaria yet to register, neither side can now progress further, leaving Türkiye and Canada as the confirmed qualifiers.
Pool G also showed Europe’s strength. Germany produced another outstanding performance, defeating Vietnam 3-0, with Marie Schölzel Weitzel contributing 15 points. Poland defeated Kenya 3-1, recovering well after dropping the second set to keep themselves in a safe position. These results leave both Germany and Poland well placed to advance from the group, reflecting their consistency so far in the tournament.
In Pool H, the defending champions Serbia continued their unbeaten run, beating Cameroon 3-0. Uzelac scored 18 points and Aleksić added 13, with Serbia also edging the defensive game through more successful digs. Their control of the match underlines their status as favorites to progress comfortably. In the same group, Ukraine battled against Japan but was beaten 3-2. The narrow defeat keeps Ukraine in the competition for now, but reduces its margin for error going forward.
Taken together, today’s results gave a clearer picture of Europe’s campaign. Türkiye, Germany, Poland, and Serbia have built strong foundations for the next stage, while Spain, Bulgaria, and Ukraine face elimination or uncertainty. With the preliminary phase moving quickly, every match is beginning to shape the picture of who will carry Europe’s hopes deeper into the tournament.
