Faroe Islands triumph in five-set epic against Iceland in Silver League showdown

In a thrilling encounter at Digranes Hall in Kópavogur, the Faroe Islands secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory (25-21, 25-18, 23-25, 20-25, 15-13) over Iceland in the CEV Men’s European Silver League 2025. The match was a rollercoaster of momentum shifts and intense rallies, with both teams refusing to back down until the final point.

The Faroese attack was spearheaded by Bjarni Joensen, who delivered a stellar 27-point performance, combining power at the net with smart shot selection. Hjørtur Joensen also played a decisive role, contributing 21 points, while Jóhan Arne Elisson Wang chipped in with 12 valuable points and showed composure in the decisive rallies. The Faroe Islands displayed consistent serving pressure and strong reception throughout, which proved crucial in edging the tight final set.

Iceland, despite a slow start, fought back valiantly. Kristján Valdimarsson was outstanding for the home team, scoring 19 points with an impressive 74% attack success rate. Hafsteinn Valdimarsson and Valens Torfi Ingimundarson added 14 points each, helping Iceland claw their way back into the match by winning the third and fourth sets. However, despite their spirited comeback, Iceland fell just short in the fifth-set decider.
