This past July 21-23, the Volleyball Federation of Armenia played host to a European qualifier for the first time – more specifically to the Pool E matches scheduled ahead of the CEV U22 Men’s Volleyball European Championship 2024. The event was held at the Gazprom Armenia Educational and Sports Complex in Yerevan with participation of the U22 men’s national teams of France, Denmark, Portugal, and Armenia.

France and Portugal eventually qualified for the final round of the competition – due to take place in the summer of 2024 in the Netherlands. France finished first in the pool after edging Portugal 3-2 in a marathon match. According to Karen Asmaryan, Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of Armenia, the European qualifier was a major hit. “About 60 young volunteers were recruited for the tournament, and we had a large Organising Committee,” Asmaryan said. The event can be regarded as a test event ahead of an unprecedented age-group European Championship that Armenia will be hosting in 2025.
