The national team of Georgia caused a major sensation on the first day of #EuroVolleyU17W competition in Vrnjačka Banja, where the young girls from the Caucasus country surprisingly edged hosts and pre-favourites Serbia 3-2 in the third match scheduled for Pool I. Georgia had made history earlier this year already by reaching the final stage of an age-group continental competition for the very first time – apart from previous championships that they were hosting and had therefore automatically qualified for. After dropping two times a one-set advantage in the match, Georgia emerged victorious at the tiebreak (15-9) to secure a truly historic win.

Elsewhere in Pool I, Poland and Italy opened the programme of the tournament in the popular Serbian spa resort. As expected, the match was very open and full of twists and turns, and in the end, after five sets, Italy managed to have the upper hand. In Tuesday’s second game, Bulgaria, after another drama, edged past The Netherlands 3-1. The fourth set, which ended 30-28 in favour of Bulgaria, was the longest in the competition since 2017, when the first set of a match featuring Bulgaria and Finland had ended with the same score. Croatia and Estonia completed the programme of the day in a match where Croatia easily defeated its rival in three straight sets.

The competition resumes on Wednesday with Georgia vs Bulgaria (12:00), Italy vs Croatia (14:30), Serbia vs Estonia (17:30) and Poland vs the Netherlands (20:00). Live streaming of all matches is available on the official YouTube channel of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia.
