The sports hall of the Secondary School no. 49 in Riga will be playing host from Thursday to Saturday to a second-round qualifier for the year’s #EuroVolleyU17W. The Latvian national team, coached by Italian Daniele Capriotti, will be locking horns with Greece, Finland, and Slovenia for a spot in the final round of the continental championship.

The Pool C matches are taking place in Latvia’s capital city. “We continue to organise qualification tournaments for young players here in Latvia. It is a great pleasure to have acquired such rights this year as well because every such small volleyball celebration increases the visibility of the sport, and it gives additional strength and motivation to our players to show a good performance,” admits the Latvian National Teams Coordinator, Mr Arturs Vitkovskis.

Four teams will play for a spot in the final stage of the competition in Serbia and Hungary. “All sorts of things can happen. At this age, the level is quite similar. Physically speaking we are fine, but our teamwork has yet to improve. We are working on connecting as many attackers as possible - so that, at least four are ready to take to the court in each set. If we can show our best performance on the court, we will be playing as equals to our opponents,” said assistant coach Jānis Jerumanis when asked about Latvia’s chances in the pool. “To finish as one of the top two teams – it is achievable but to do so, we need to work hard on the court.”

The final stage of #EuroVolleyU17W will run from July 11-22 in Serbia and Hungary with participation of 16 teams for the first time in history (previously there were 12).
