Madrid, Spain, July 11, 2019. Pascual Saurín, the head coach of the Spanish women’s national team, draws the line after the first major competition of this summer, the European Golden League, and emphasises how important these results have been for the upcoming #EuroVolleyW.
“The team did a great job in the European Golden League, and this performance has strengthened us psychologically. At the same time, we have cemented some concepts about our game,” he says. He is especially satisfied with the results achieved against strong rivals. “We had high goals but the opponents started with a better ranking than us, so we had to fight until the last game to make it to the Final Four,” he recalls.
In the Final Four held in Croatia, Spain could not claim the bronze medal after losing to Belarus, after playing against the same opponent twice in the group stage as well. “Belarus found it very comfortable playing with us and they pressured us with their service and block, so we have to find a way to change this and play better at EuroVolley,” the Spanish coach continues.
“We will be competing at some friendly tournaments to make some adjustments to our game,” he adds. The head coach looks at the rivals in Pool D. “Germany and Russia are the favourites. The first match against Slovakia will be decisive for us in the competition and it will be a very nervous match, especially as we play against the hosts. We have played Belarus a number of times already and we should change our style with this team. Switzerland are rather similar to us, they are growing with young players and they will come with the same desire to perform well as us.”
