Poland claim gold, ticket to #EuroVolleyU17M at historic EEVZA championship in Armenia

Yerevan, Armenia, December 19, 2018. The Volleyball Federation of Armenia (VFA) broke new ground as they successfully hosted the 2018 edition of the EEVZA U15 Men Championship, with participation of as many as nine countries. Poland were the eventual winners of the competition held in Yerevan, thus securing their spot in the Final Round of next year’s U17 European Championship in Bulgaria.

The tournament drew much attention in Armenia, with a large number of fans and media attending the matches at the Russian-Armenian University in Yerevan. The VIPs in attendance included VFA President Hrachya Muradyan, representatives of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs as well as of the City of Yerevan. The online channel VSPORT provided live streaming of the matches so that fans across Armenia and from abroad as well could follow the competition.

In Pool A, Belarus beat Lithuania 3-0 and on the opening day, Latvia routed hosts Armenia in three sets as well. Armenia lost their next match as well, 0-3 to Russia, before Belarus stamped their second victory in as many matches beating Latvia 3-0. On Day 3, Russia and Belarus continued their winning streak with 3-0 wins over Lithuania and Armenia, respectively. There were many fans, especially for the matches of the Armenian national team.



In Pool B, Poland and Ukraine started the competition with straight-set wins over Georgia and Estonia. On Day 4, Poland beat Estonia 3-0 to stay at the top of the pool table before Ukraine beat Georgia by the same score. In Pool A, Armenia put up a fight against Lithuania but ended up losing 1-3 while Russia beat Latvia 3-0.

On Day 5, the teams contested the last matches in the pool. In ‘virtual’ semi-finals, Poland fought hard to edge Ukraine 3-2 while Russia beat Belarus by the same score to progress to the final too.

The tournament finished on Tuesday, December 18. With Armenia ranked ninth, Lithuania beat Georgia 3-0 to finish in seventh place, before Latvia claimed the Baltic derby with Estonia 3-1 to settle for the fifth position of the final standing. Ukraine won the bronze medal following a 3-1 win over Belarus before Poland claimed the ‘grand finale’ of the competition by the same score against Russia.



VFA President Muradyan presented the eventual winners and medallists with their respective honours together with the Deputy Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs of the Republic of Armenia, Mr Gabriel Ghazaryan, as well as the Advisor to the President of the Armenian National Olympic Committee, Mr Armen Grigoryan, and VFA sponsor Shahen Kasis.
