Poland have extended their winning streak to fourth straight matches at the EEVZA Men’s U18 Championship held at the state-of-the-art Gazprom Armenia Educational Sports Complex in Yerevan. The event counts as a zonal qualifier for next year’s #EuroVolleyU18M, which is due to take place in Georgia in the summer of 2022.

Poland opened the programme of the fifth competition day by recording a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Estonia to remain top of the charts with four wins in as many matches and maximum 12 points. Poland stood out with their blocking game as they stormed to a 25-14, 25-19, 25-15 victory.

After surprisingly losing to Ukraine earlier in the tournament, Russia showed no mercy for their neighbours from Belarus, celebrating a 3-0 win (25-16, 25-20, 25-15) – which keeps them in second place in the current standing.

Finally, Latvia produced a sensational 3-1 victory over Ukraine – which is especially surprising knowing that Ukraine had previously beaten pre-favourites Russia. Ukraine won the first set but after that, they could not deliver their best performance – despite the obvious support from the local fans in Yerevan. After losing the first set, Latvia responded by sweeping three in a row (25-21, 25-19, 25-18) to celebrate their second victory in Yerevan.

The competition continues on Saturday with Russia playing Latvia, Estonia taking on Belarus and hosts Armenia up against tournament leaders Poland. The entrance is free, but all fans have to comply with the COVID-19 mitigation measures adopted by the organisers and wear a mask at all times.
