The Eastern European Volleyball Zonal Association (EEVZA) Championship for U16 boys held in Kääriku, Estonia ended with the triumph of Poland, as the young White-and-Reds remained unbeaten in the tournament and did not concede a single set to their opponents.
In Sunday’s final, the hosts from Estonia – the winners of Pool B contested earlier in the competition – faced their peers from Poland, who had emerged as the top side from Pool A. The home heroes had to accept a 0-3 (18-25, 16-25, 19-25) defeat. This way, Poland did not only claim top honours from the EEVZA competition, but also secured a spot in next year’s European Championship in Yerevan, Armenia.
Michal Topor became top scorer for Poland with 12 points while Filip Lutoborski added eight to the winners’ count. Romek Meius and Holger Purga contributed 10 points apiece for Estonia in their losing effort.
Team Ukraine defeated Latvia by 3-1 in the bronze medal match while Georgia defeated Azerbaijan in straight sets in the matchup where fifth and sixth place were at stake.
The EEVZA tournament counted as the first round of qualification for the European Championship in this age group. With Poland guaranteed direct access to the final round, the next five teams all made it to the second round of qualifications scheduled for the spring of 2025. Only a week ago, Poland had triumphed at the EEVZA #EuroVolleyU16W qualifier held on home soil in Debica.
