Baku, Azerbaijan, October 3, 2017. The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received on Tuesday the players and coaching staff of Azerbaijan’s national Volleyball team, who finished in fourth place at the 2017 women’s EuroVolley co-hosted by Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Azerbaijan equalled their best result in the competition to date – since they had finished fourth in 2005 too, in what was their first appearance in the Final Round of the European Championship.

Team Azerbaijan swept three matches in a row in the pool stage of the tournament before edging Germany in the quarterfinals. The hosts lost a dramatic semi-final (2-3) to eventual silver medal winners The Netherlands before conceding a 1-3 defeat to Turkey in the bronze medal game.

Mr Aliyev paid a visit to each of the matches Team Azerbaijan contested at the 2017 women’s EuroVolley in front of an almost sell-out crowd at the iconic National Gymnastics Arena in Baku. First Lady, Mrs Mehriban Aliyeva attended the quarterfinal match with Germany as well as the semi-final with the Netherlands.
