National Team News
On Wednesday the national team of Denmark and Spain met in the first match of Pool B in the #EuroLeagueM. It was a match where the Danish team had a little bit of advantage since they are the CEV Volleyball European Silver League 2021 winners. The Spanish team is probably the underdog in this group, although they can always surprise the opponent which was proven tonight.
The national team of Spain surprised the Danish team and the Spaniards won the match by 2:3 (25-19, 17-25, 25-22, 22-25, 10-15). With eight aces and eight kill blocks throughout the match, the Spanish team proved that they are not such underdogs as everyone present them to be.
The first set began smoothly for the Danish team with a 6-1 lead and it already seemed like it would be an easy match. But Spaniards managed to stop the Danish domination. Although Danish won the first set 25-19, it already showed how the Spanish team can surprise everyone.
The confirmation of that came in the second set where the Spaniards took a win. While it started off as a point-by-point game in the middle of the set Danish team lost their focus and their so-called domination stopped at 13-13. The 'era' of the Spanish team began and they even went to five points advantage. They only kept scoring afterward and easily won the set win 17-25 wherewith three aces and 13 winning spikes they gave a message to everyone that they are not such underdogs as everyone thought they were.
In the third set, the Danish team took the initiative and got things back under their control. Although in this set Spaniards once again showed their strength and competitiveness, it wasn't enough to take one more set-win. The national team of Denmark won the set 25-22 and only needed one more to win their first match.
But Spaniards didn't let that happen so easily! Everyone saw how much they wanted to take another win in sets. Which they made happen. It even seemed like Danish players had everything in their hands and in their control but at 12-14, it all changed. Spanish players took a turn and managed to get in advance of five points (13-18) and finished the set with their win of 22-25.
The fifth set was the deciding set. To be or not to be for both teams. But at 9-13, it was quite obvious that the Spanish team will take a well-deserved win. Which they did. The set ended with a glorious 10-15 win.
The next matches for both teams are on Saturday. Spain will meet with Ukraine and Denmark will meet with Croatia.
