With a commanding 3-0 victory (25-15, 25-21, 25-17) over Hungary on Saturday evening, Sweden secured a spot in the CEV European Silver League 2025 Finals – and remains undefeated this season so far. Under the leadership of head coach Gido Vermeulen, the Swedish team dominated the match at the Johann-Pölz-Halle in Amstetten from start to finish, giving Hungary no chance.
Top scorer for the Scandinavian side was Jacob Link with 18 points. On the Hungarian side, Péter Andor Boldizsár and Kristóf Horváth each scored eight points. The match lasted 71 minutes only.
Vermeulen expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance:
“We are happy, especially since the heat has been tough on us lately. Today we played with great discipline, especially in blocking and serving. I believe we will be facing Luxembourg in the battle for promotion, as I expect Austria to beat Hungary.”
Luxembourg, who this week secured 3-0 wins over both the Faroe Islands and Georgia, is also on the verge of playoff qualification, with just one loss so far. For Hungary, a clear victory over hosts Austria on Sunday is necessary to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
Hungary’s head coach Peter Nagy was disappointed after the defeat:
“We lost clearly – Sweden was better in every aspect of the game. They made very few errors once again. Obviously, I expected a better performance from our team. This loss is disappointing, but we do not have time to dwell on it. We need to focus on tomorrow. I expect a very tough match against Austria – they played really well at times against Sweden yesterday.”
The decisive clash for the second playoff ticket in the CEV Silver League promises high tension on Sunday. The Austria vs Hungary showdown will be broadcast live on ORF Sport+ starting at 17:35 CEST.
