The league round of the CEV Volleyball European Silver League 2025 Women has concluded last weekend, as the dramatic tournament in Amstetten, Austria, delivered the two finalists, Switzerland and Latvia.
The three sides which were still in with a chance for the two berths for the final – Switzerland, Latvia and Austria – collided in Amstetten, with Austria delivering a hard-fought 3:2 win in the first match of the tournament against Latvia.
Austria took the first two sets, 25:16 and 25:23, and needed one of the next two sets to secure the maximum number of points in the match. However, Latvia bounced back and secured the next two sets, 25:19 and 25:19, pushing the match into the decider, where Austria took a 15:9 win.
Marta Levinska had 27 points for Latvia, but in the next match, the Baltic side could not avoid another loss, as Switzerland took a clear 3:0 win (25:19; 25:18 and 25:23), as Julie Lengweiler and Tabea Eichler combined for 29 points.
Switzerland then went on to clinch the sixth win in six matches, a dominating 3:0 win (25:19, 25:16; 25:18) against Austria, as Eichler and Leingweiler combined for 30 of their team’s 75 points.
Both Latvia and Austria finished behind Switzerland, with four wins and two losses, but Latvia had 13 points, as opposed to Austria’s 12, therefore secured the second place in the pool standings, with the two sides now colliding in the final, which will take place over two legs, the first one scheduled for 26 June and the second one for 29 June, with Switzerland hosting the second leg.
Israel (4-2), Georgia (3-3), Iceland (3-3), North Macedonia (2-4), Luxembourg (1-5) and the Faroe Islands (0-6) completed the standings.
The second week of the CEV Volleyball European Silver League 2025 Men also took place, with Kópavogur and Baku hosting the two tournaments.
Sweden are the only team to secure a clean sweep so far, failing to drop a set in the first four matches played, as they dominated the Faroe Islands (25:17; 25:15 and 25:13) and Iceland (25:7; 25:11; 25:17) this week.
Luxembourg, winners against Azerbaijan, 3:0, but losing the match against Hungary, 0:3, are second, while Hungary also have two wins in two matches, before facing Iceland and Georgia this week, while Sweden return next week with matches against Hungary and Austria.
