After the day off, the CEV Volleyball European Championship 2022 - Women continued in the Prostějov National Sports Center with the match program of the 4th round of the basic group II. And it was getting tough, because it was possible to decide on those advancing to the semi-finals and the battles for 5th to 8th place.
A potential medal hung in the air right from the opening encounter between the favorites from Italy and Slovenia, who have been playing excellently so far. The Italians flew into the match like the wind (10:3), then they had problems (14:15), but they managed the end in an exemplary manner to 25:20. And then they were in control of the entire second set, although in the end it was close to 25:22. In the third part, the improved Slovenia completely dominated, after which the team from the Apennine Peninsula led by Adigwe (15 points) returned to their previous quality performance and won 3:1.
Michele Fanni"We knew that we had a very difficult match against a strong opponent with top-class smashers that we needed to defend. The girls made me happy, how concentrated they started, they had a great performance in the first two sets. And after a very bad third set, they were able to return to the top level of volleyball in the fourth. We are happy that we managed to play according to our expectations and win this very important match for three points."
The Finns and the Hungarians, so far the worst teams in Group II, shared the chance to extend their performance at the top tournament in the Czech Republic. The Hungarian team had the upper hand for the majority of the duel, but they narrowly missed the end of the second act. However, this was Hungary's only major hesitation, otherwise they were better at all activities. And although they stumbled again in the very finish, they did not let the resulting triumph of 25:18, 24:26, 25:11, 25:22 slip away.
Gabor König"It's a big relief for us, because we should have scored on it in the previous matches against Slovenia and Poland. This time we started well, then unnecessarily lost the second set and fortunately managed the rest of the match. Which was not easy because Finland did not play badly at all. But we finally managed to win and today we can be satisfied, we managed to keep the hope of progressing to further battles for placement."
If Turkey wanted to keep the possibility of not falling out of the battles for precious metals, they had to beat Poland in the last match on Wednesday. The attractive hit had its roots, it did not lack drama, including a slight injury to the recording artist Walczak after a collision with a partner. And the comprehensively struggling Turks controlled the entire course of the key clash. They lost 8:10 in the opening set, but then dominated 25:14. In the next two parts, they had a much harder time, but mainly with quality blocks and strong attacks, the excellent Mumcular managed to win 3:0.
Rasit Berk"It was an extremely important match for us, so that we wouldn't lose the chance to advance to the semi-finals. That is why we are happy for the excellent performance of the entire team and a clear victory after a fairly clear development. However, it has not been decided yet, we just as well have to manage it tomorrow."
