Sombor, Serbia, August 2, 2018. The Serbian city of Sombor hosted last week the 2018 U16 Balkan Volleyball Championship – Women, with the tournament running from July 25 to 29. Teams from as many as six Balkan countries competed in a single round robin across five days of action, with Turkey emerging as the eventual winners to secure their qualification to the 2019 #EuroVolleyU16W Final Round.

After four consecutive victories for hosts Serbia and Turkey, these two teams locked horns in the ‘final’ game of the tournament for the crown and a highly coveted ticket to the European Championship Finals. Despite losing the first set, the Turkish team managed to come from behind to defeat Serbia 3-1 (19-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-14). Thanks to their fifth victory in as many matches, Turkey lifted the trophy for the eventual champions, with Serbia and Greece completing the podium in second and third place, respectively. Pelin Eroktay from Turkey received the award for the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

As a result, Turkey secured their ticket to the Final Round of the 2019 CEV U16 Volleyball European Championship – Women. The remaining teams will be trying to achieve that same feat through the second round of European qualifications due to take place in the spring of 2019 (April 25 to 28).
