Ukraine and Estonia opened the programme of the day, with Ukraine coming from behind in the first set to take it by 25-22. Even though Estonia put up much of a fight, Ukraine comfortably stormed to a 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-20). On Monday, Ukraine had caused a sensation by recording a 3-2 win over tournament favourites Russia.
Latvia and hosts Armenia contested the next match, with Latvia easily securing a landslide win in the first as well as in the second set (25-13, 25-10). Armenia fought bravely in the third set and did stand a chance but their lack of international experience came to the fore and Latvia eventually sealed a 3-0 victory (25-21).
Despite securing an early advantage in the first and the second sets, Belarus could not make use of that and by delivering a very solid performance, especially at blocking, Poland claimed a 3-0 victory as well (25-18, 25-21, 25-22).
A large number of young Volleyball players were present in the arena for the opening day of the competition – which many regard a real Volleyball fiesta in Armenia, as stated by the best Volleyball coach of the XX century from the Caucasus country, Mr Robert Zakaryan.
