The Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB) has announced that José Luis Moltó will be working with their men’s national team and take over the reins of the group as their head coach. The unexpected departure of Miguel Rivera has forced the RFEVB to quickly find a new coach, a process that has resulted in reaching an agreement with a real legend of Spanish Volleyball, in a commitment from the RFEVB to continue the work done this far. José Luis Moltó had been an assistant coach to Miguel Rivera for the last two seasons.

2007 European champion José Luis Moltó will be at the helm of the Red Lynxes later this summer

“The choice of José Luis Moltó is a commitment to continue the work done in recent years. Moltó is a homegrown talent, with an extensive career on and off the court, who has our full confidence to face the upcoming challenges.”

Agustín Martín Santos
President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation

The Red Lynxes will face an intense summer with the European Golden League and the first half of the CEV EuroVolley 2026 qualifiers. The Spanish national team will be placed under the guidance of Volleyball legend José Luis Moltó. He ranks second in the all-time list when it comes to the most international caps in the history of Spanish Volleyball and was a key player when Spain won a historic, rather unexpected European Championship gold in 2007. In addition to that, the Alicante native participated in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games in a career that helped him secure an impressive collection of multiple individual and team awards including the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit in Spain.

After his retirement from competitive sport, José Luis Moltó took over the reins of Río Duero Soria in the Men’s Super League, before continuing his path on the sidelines with Bera Bera and Harresi Bolei de Hondarribia. Moltó has combined coaching clubs with national teams. In 2016, he was an assistant coach of his friend Miguel Ángel Falasca in the Czech Republic, before serving as head coach of the Spanish men’s U20 national team in the 2021/2022 season and as assistant coach to Miguel Rivera for the last two years.

“Becoming head coach of the Spanish national team is a dream and a real challenge at the same time. It is an achievement that you always have in mind, that you can reach at some point. Thanks to the trust of RFEVB and the closeness with Miguel Rivera, I was able to re-engage with high-level Volleyball, and now I have this opportunity. We want to continue with the work we have been doing in the last two years and bring a different perspective to some aspects."
