Match Report

Czech National team dominated their second match of the Golden #EuroLeagueM

Article

The Czech National Team dominated their second match of the Golden European League 2022. After winning in Estonia 3:1, they defeated the Belgian team 3:0 (26:24, 25:16, 25:12) at home in the sports hall in Kutná Hora. After the first set was evenly matched, the Czechs dominated the next two games and are now undefeated in the 2022 Golden European League standings.

In the third match, the Czech will face Latvia on Wednesday, June 1.The Belgians started better and opened the first set with 3:1 and 4:2 lead, but after a successful attack by Jan Galabov, the Czeches tied at 4:4 and gradually took the initiative - with concentrated pressure they forced the Belgians to make mistakes and turned the match to 8:5. The Belgian coach took a timeout, but even that did not help his young team significantly. The precise Czech players, who were driven in this part of the game in the field especially by the cooperation of Jakub Janouch and Jan Galabov, dominated the first set - they led 11:7, 15:10 and 19:14. However, a series of errors offered the Belgians the opportunity to dramatize the end of the opening set - the Belgians even tied the score at 23:23 and with a patient attack they fought off the first Czech set point. The Czech team did not falter the seconed one though, thanks to a successful block by the Indra-Zajíček duo and Jiří Novák's team won the first set 26:24.

The course of the second set was quite unambiguous. Both teams entered it with concentrated defence, but the points gradually increased again, especially on the Czech team's side. The Czech team attacked concentratedly, successfully covering the attacks of the young Belgian team led by Italian coach Emanuele Zanini, holding a two to three point lead from the beginning and increasing the pressure. Even two timeouts in short succession did not help Belgium. The Czech volleyball players gradually increased the gap to 21:13 with a focused team play, dominated all the game activities and finally dominated the set with a clear 25:16 victory.

The Czech team capped off a strong second set with a strong third set. Although they were 0:2 down at the beginning of the set, they did not let the Belgians into the game any more. Thanks to a successful series of serves by the captain Adam Zajicek, the team turned the score to 9:2, and thanks to accurate hits by Patrik Indra and a precise attack coming from a secure defence, did not allow the the visiting team to influence the third set significantly. The Czechs won the last set 24:12 and celebrated their second victory in the Golden European League.

"I can evaluate the match positively. The first set, although we were still leading, we were a bit impatient. We didn't want to accept adult volleyball, or volleyball played by teams at the top level, so we were impatient and made unnecessary mistakes. After that first set, things calmed down a bit and we started to build pressure and the Belgians lost ground"

Jiří Novák
Head Coach of Czech Republic National Team

"From the beginning we dictated the pace of the match, it was up to us how we approached it. We knew that the Belgians are young, immature guys who haven't really enjoyed adult volleyball yet, so it was up to us to keep them under control or give them a sniff. Going into the first set we showed that we were well prepared for them, we felt physically good and I think sticking to some physical things and some enjoyment of the game and obviously the crowd helped the match turn out the way it did"

Adam Zajicek
Captain of Czech Republic National Team

"My team played a great first set, but then they can't keep the game at the same level. And that's exactly what happened today. We started well, we had a good first set, but in the second set there was a critical moment and we couldn't get back into the game. We stopped receiving and that's what it was all about. You can see that the Czechs are more experienced, play good together and their defensive system works. They deserved to win today and it was a great lesson for our players"

Emanuele Zanini
Head Coach of Belgium National Team
