San Marino, August 8, 2018. San Marino’s Lorenzo Benvenuti and Paolo Paganelli finished in fourth place their campaign at the Small Countries Division zonal Beach Volleyball event held this past weekend in Vaduz, Liechtenstein.
Benvenuti/Paganelli started their journey in the tournament with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Scotland’s Mitchell Brown/Callum Stewart (21-12, 21-11) before recording another emphatic win in their matchup with Liechtenstein’s Jannis Wymann/Severin Broder (21-7, 21-10). The Sammarinese duo lost the following day a close game to Georgios Chrysostomou/Antonis Liotatis of Cyprus (21-17, 21-23, 11-15), however they resumed their march soon afterwards with a commanding 21-12, 21-13 win over another Cypriot team, Charalampos Zorpis and Antreas Savvidis.

As the tournament reached its most exciting stage, the fight for the medals became extremely intense. Teams from San Marino and Monaco lost their respective semi-finals to Cypriot opposition 1-2. Benvenuti/Paganelli lost the bronze medal match as well to Monaco’s Pascal Ferry/Vincent Ferry 1-2 (19-21, 21-19, 8-15) to end the competition in fourth place. The Sammarinese team could somehow be happy that they lost 13-15 at the tiebreak in the semi with the eventual winners of the tournament, Dimitris Apostolou and Sotiris Siapanis of Cyprus.
The Sammarinese delegation including coach Matteo Galli returned home knowing that their hard work is paying dividends and producing results that can provide a further boost of energy to the country’s Beach Volleyball community. Following the experience in Vaduz, Benvenuti will now focus entirely on preparations for the upcoming indoor season – where he will become San Marino’s first ever player to compete in the elite Italian Superleague with the star-studded side of Volley MODENA coached by Julio Velasco.
