Luxembourg, May 8, 2020. Italian superstar Cristian Savani has taken to social media to announce his retirement from competitive Volleyball. Born in 1982, Savani reached the pinnacle of his career when helping Italy secure the bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics.
Savani captained the Italian national team for a number of years, collecting as many as 231 international caps in the process, and was a member of the team that claimed back-to-back EuroVolley titles in 2003 and 2005.
Savani’s resume includes another two European Championship silver medals in 2011 and 2013, when Italy lost the title-deciding match to Serbia and Russia in Vienna and Copenhagen, respectively.
Known for his athleticism and spectacular back-row spikes, Savani, married to Dragan Travica’s sister Mihaela, is hoping to remain associated with the sport. Italian fans will especially cherish memories of the bronze medal match at the London 2012 Olympics, where he scored as many as 23 points to help his side beat Bulgaria 3-1 in front of 12,000 fans at Earls Court.
