Tirana, Albania, April 23, 2019. Partizani and Tirana are the two teams due to fight for the championship title of the Albanian women’s national league. It is a much-anticipated derby featuring two teams from the capital, Tirana, which have been among the dominant forces this season. Mirdita and Barleti Volley were the losers of the semi-finals and are no longer in contention for top honours.
The defending champions, Partizani won both semi-finals against Mirdita with the same score (3-2). The fans enjoyed two close and dramatic matches, as both teams played with everything they had in an effort to stay alive in the competition. Mirdita, who returned to the top division this season, were hoping to cap their comeback with a historic success but they eventually failed to do so. Partizani, on the other hand, will be trying to retain the title they won last year.
The other semi-final was just as exciting, as Tirana somehow surprisingly edged Barleti Volley. Barleti comfortably won the first match 3-0 and they looked likely to progress to the finals with ease, but things changed. Tirana rose to the occasion, played very well, believed in their chances and came back strong, recording 3-2 and 3-1 wins to secure their spot in the finals.
