Ikast, Denmark, October 17, 2019. After 4 intense days and as many as 36 matches, Denmark and Sweden took home the U17 women’s and men’s NEVZA Championship trophy, respectively.

The annual U17 NEVZA Championship held in Ikast, Denmark, once again brought together the best U17 players of the Northern European countries for four days of non-stop Volleyball and loads of fantastic rallies in the pursuit of this year’s championship title.

Besides Denmark (the host country), teams representing Norway, Sweden, the Faroe Islands, Iceland, England and Greenland (only women) participated in the tournament. Thursday afternoon four days of intense games culminated in two fantastic and well-played finals.

In the men’s final, Norway and Sweden had qualified as #1 and #2 respectively from the men’s round robin. In their first encounter, Sweden had won a very close game with 3-2, and the gold-medal match between the two neighbours turned out to be nothing less than more exciting. The two teams followed each other closely throughout the whole game, showing great Volleyball on both sides of the net, and only in the end Sweden seemed to find the extra bit of energy that brought home the victory (23-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22, 15-8).

In the women’s final, hosts Denmark were up against England after having played their way through the tournament. The two teams had their first encounter in the pool play, where England took a rather comfortable victory 3-1. The gold medal match was a roller-coaster ride with ups and downs on both sides, however in the last two sets, Denmark’s offense hit the right buttons, and the home team could take home the victory in four sets, celebrating their win with the cheering, supportive crowd (25-18, 22-25, 25-12, 25-18).

The women’s final was the last chapter of a well-run tournament with great support both locally in Denmark and within the Northern European countries. More than 6,300 viewers followed the young talents throughout the tournament on the Danish Volley TV that offered live streams of all 36 matches.

“It is always a pleasure to host these championships for young volleyball players. It helps us all create a culture around our sport, which is much more important than the actual results of the matches. We hope that this kind of events can contribute and motivate the players to a long life with Volleyball,” said Sven Brix, Secretary General of Volleyball Denmark.
