Romania prevail in five-setter thriller against Hungary
The match at Tüskecsarnok Sporthall BUDAPEST was the first game for Hungary in Pool C of the CEV Volleyball European Golden League 2022 - Women. The hosts took on Romania, for whom it was already the third match (the visiting team recorded one loss and a defeat against Ukraine in previous encounters). The opener turned into a fierce battle. The hosts were slightly better in attack, recording 39% and 14 points in this skill, but also committed more own mistakes what was executed by Romania, who proved better on block. Unfortunately, in the middle of the set, Roxana Roman suffered an injury and was not able to continue the game, but either way, Romania denied one set point to prevail in that part in extra time.
It seemed that the hosts, powered by their star Anett Nemeth (7 points) quickly banished memories from the first set, taking an early three-point lead and keeping the score safe during most of the second set. However, Romania bounced back to tie at 22-22 and quickly moved one point ahead. Hungary's head coach Andreas Vollmer called time out, which helped his team to withstand pressure. Duo Nemeth & Szucs (6 points in 2nd set) immediately completed the mission and the hosts closed the set.
Hungary, after winning the previous part, gained more confidence on the court. The home team dominated on block (6-3) could also count Reka Szedmak, who delivered six winning attacks becoming her team's best scorer.
The visiting team was determined to extend the game. Starting the 4th set with an 8-3 lead, they kept on shining in all components, making block their strongest weapon - seven block stuffs. Hungary couldn't find any answer.
Romania began the tie-break much better, with Rodica Buterez on the service line they jumped to a 6-4 lead and kept on improving their advantage. Coach Guillermo Naranjo Hernandez's team played almost flawlessly and with 57% in attack and moved the score to 14-9. Even if the hosts defended two match points, Didona Zadorojnai finally successfully blocked Kinga Szucs to end the game.
