Luxembourg, December 17, 2020. There will be a Turkish derby in the semis of the women’s CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2021 after both THY ISTANBUL and Sistem9 Yesilyurt ISTANBUL claimed their respective quarterfinal matches without dropping a single set.
Even though Vandoeuvre NANCY VB of France put up a fight from start to end, THY ISTANBUL were just dominant in their quarterfinal fixture in Las Palmas, Spain. The Turkish team increased their advantage slowly but surely to take the first set 25-21. The French team caught a promising start to the second set but THY ISTANBUL remained focussed and it did not take long for them to assert their supremacy, cruising to a second 25-21 set win. NANCY, who on Wednesday night had edged hosts CV GRAN CANARIA at the tiebreak, failed to take at least one set and the Turkish team coached by Italian Marcello Abbondanza stormed to a 25-19 score to seal their second win in as many matches in Las Palmas without losing a single set. Ebrar Karakurt top scored for THY ISTANBUL for the second day in a row on a personal tally of 17 points.
THY ISTANBUL have qualified for the semis of the Challenge Cup for the second straight season, after last year the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic caused the cancellation of the final stages of all European Cups. Their next opponent in the competition will be city rival Sistem9 Yesilyurt ISTANBUL, who needed three sets only (25-19, 25-22, 25-11) to cruise past Kairos PONTA DELGADA of Portugal on home soil, with Canadian Jennifer Cross top scoring on 13 points followed by Derya Cebecioglu with 12.
