Istanbul, Turkey, December 16, 2020. THY ISTANBUL will resume their journey in the 2021 edition of the women’s Challenge Cup later today when they play C.S.M. LUGOJ of Romania in the 8th Finals. The match will be taking place in Las Palmas, where CV GRAN CANARIA play host to one of four ‘bubbles’ scheduled for this stage of the competition. In their maiden participation in the Challenge Cup, THY ISTANBUL reached the semis last season, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic forced the cancellation of the final stages of all European Cups.

THY ISTANBUL General Secretary Ramazan Yildirim said, “We are having a very intense season this far, but we have managed everything very well. In order to achieve the goals we set in the Misli.com Sultans League, we won some very important matches. We know that we are in a tough race to be among the top four teams and we are working very hard for this. Another goal of our team for this season is winning the 2021 CEV Challenge Cup. We want to progress step by step, winning both matches in Gran Canaria to reach the semi-finals.”

“We came to Las Palmas knowing that we are going to play tough matches,” said head coach Marcello Abbondanza. “On Wednesday, we will play against C.S.M. LUGOJ - which is a good team. We definitely need to concentrate as much as possible, since I do not think it will be easy. Our team is in a good condition, but I think we are a little tired since we have been playing so many matches in a row. We have to be strong and resilient because the match we are going to play is a must-take one. We want to reach the semi-finals by showing our best performance.”

Aslı Kalaç, middle blocker of the team, said, “We have a very busy match schedule, but I think we have been dealing with it very well. We have had a five-game streak in the Sultans League. I am happy that we are where we want to be in the standing of the national championship, but of course, we need to continue in the same way. We have key matches ahead of us, as we will be playing against teams such as Fenerbahçe and Nilüfer Belediyespor. However, we are currently focusing on our 8th Final match. If we win, we will play the quarterfinals. I believe that if we perform at our best, we will win these matches.”

Talented libero Berin Yildirim, who has been wearing the shirt of the team sponsored by Turkish Airlines since 2016, commented, “We have a great atmosphere in our team. The harmony and friendship both on and off the court is very good. I think our harmony is an important factor in making this tough season so good for us. Our team’s goals are quite big. We focus on one match at a time. The match we will play with C.S.M. LUGOJ is very important on the way to winning the cup. That is why we need to concentrate and do our best. I believe in my team. The CEV Challenge Cup will be ours this year!”

Puerto Rican national team spiker Daly Santana added, “I have learned a lot from our team these past few weeks and I am really proud of the way we compete and have given our best in every game. As for me, surgery and recovery went really well and I am expecting to be 100% and back out there very soon. I am excited to play and I am looking forward to helping our team in the best way I can. The support to our team this season has been incredible and I just want to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has been following every match and supporting us from home. Stay safe and happy holidays!”
